Aims & objectives

The primary aim of the workshop “Postcolonial Traumas: Memory, Trauma, and Culture” was to raise awareness among participants about the impact of historical and cultural traumas related to postcolonialism while exploring strategies to promote intercultural dialogue and resilience. The workshop addressed the need for a deeper understanding of collective memory and cultural identity dynamics in postcolonial contexts, creating a space for expression and critical reflection. This activity aligned with Universal View’s goals to enhance cultural diversity, promote social cohesion, and encourage active citizenship by addressing complex issues of social justice and historical legacies.

Target group & international/intercultural composition of the group & team

The target group for the workshop consisted of participants from diverse backgrounds and nationalities, reflecting an international and intercultural composition. Participants included individuals from France, Spain, Germany, and Senegal, among other countries with shared colonial histories. This diversity enabled a rich exchange of perspectives on the impacts of postcolonial traumas in various cultural and historical contexts. The team of trainers was also diverse, including professionals specializing in intercultural education and human rights, primarily from France and other European countries. This composition fostered mutual understanding and collective learning, aligning with the workshop’s goal of promoting cultural inclusion.

Training methods used & main activities

I used non-formal learning methods to promote active and inclusive participation. Activities included small group discussions, role-playing to explore cultural tensions and historical memory, and case studies based on real postcolonial contexts. Creative exercises, such as storytelling and collage, allowed participants to express complex ideas artistically. These approaches fostered critical thinking and collaborative engagement.

Outcomes of the activity

The workshop deepened participants' understanding of the impacts of postcolonial traumas on cultural and identity dynamics. Participants developed concrete projects, such as cultural exhibitions and intercultural dialogue initiatives. The success of the workshop was evident in their active engagement, positive feedback, and the collaborations initiated afterward. The outcomes were documented in a final report and through publications on the Universal View website and its social media platforms.
