Aims & objectives

Training course "Poetry Adventure" is a Youth in Action Programme project, Sub-action 4.3 - Training and Networking, which aimed primarily at enhancing the knowledge, attitudes, skills and abilities in youth work, using poetry as a method of inclusion for young people with cultural integration difficulties. It gave special focus to improving the quality of educational practice and to the "Youth in Action" Programme as ways of promoting poetry as a form of cultural inclusion. Secondary objectives were to include the promotion of socio-cultural inclusion, promoting active involvement of young poets in their communities.

The main topics of the training course were:
- Youth in Action Programme advocacy
- Poetry Writing – basic types, sources of inspiration, usage of poetry today
- Making and Marketing Young Literature, Making and Publicising a Literary Network
- Social Inclusion Theory

The main goal of our training course “Poetry Adventure” was to improve creativity and increase knowledge, learning methods and experiences of participants, so that they will be able to use it in everyday work for youth with educational difficulties and social integration including them in active local community life.

Target group & international/intercultural composition of the group & team

Target group on this training course were youth workers/youth leaders, teachers, young poets...and all other who are using poetry as a method of inclusion for young people with cultural integration difficulties.

Total number of participants in this training course was 18 and they came from 10 countries - Bulgaria, Estonia, France, Hungary, The Netherlands, Italy, Romania, Slovenia, Spain and Turkey.

Training methods used & main activities

Training Course aimed to improve participants’ knowledge, attitudes, competences and skills in youth work by using poetry as a method for social inclusion of youth with cultural inclusion problems.

The program activities included: work on individual expression and group poetry, poetic creation, discovery of nature and cultural environment as a source of inspiration.

The working methods for this Training Course combined formal, non-formal and informal learning, by means of formal sessions, group activities, workshops, working groups, individual and private work, experience sharing, study visit, learning by doing etc. as well as visual, auditory and kinesthetic.

This training course presented to the participants a range of themes with focus on the development of competencies, knowledge and skills conducive to an informed and professional approach to using poetry as a means of cultural integration of youth.

Training course "Poetry Adventure" has covered topics:
- Youth in Action Programme advocacy
- Cultural diversity issue
- Cultural integration issue
- Poetry writing techniques
- Poetical sources of inspiration with particular potential for the process of cultural integration
- Prejudices and stereotypes towards unemployed youth with cultural integration difficulties
- Means of poetical expression and different uses of poetry in the process of and as a mark of cultural integration
- Methods for the social inclusion of youth with cultural inclusion problems
- Practical approach for the cultural inclusion of young people with fewer opportunities in everyday activities
- Development of practical project proposals

Outcomes of the activity

The greatest outcomes on young participants were given by its active participation in all course activities. At the end of the Training Course, the participants:
1. Have internalized the problems facing young people with poetic inclinations and cultural integration issues;
2. Have exchanged experiences and best practices with other youth workers;
3. Have improved their knowledge and have explored possibilities for inclusion of young poets with cultural integration problems in the local artistic life;
4. Be part of a network of youth workers with a particular interest in poetry as a means for cultural integration;
5. Have improved their knowledge regarding the Youth in Action Programme;
6. Have a greater knowledge about poetry, art and culture in the international context created by the presence of the 10 partners
7. Know how to use the knowledge and the experience accumulated for further work in addressing socio-cultural exclusion;
8. Have explored the role that youth can play in promoting cultural inclusion, and in particular the inclusion of other young people with fewer opportunities;
9. Have begun to develop new ideas for projects;
10. Be encouraged to play an active role in society at a local, national and international level.

This training activity helped in increasing the number of young people with a positive awareness about the issue of cultural exclusion can generate a snowball type multiplier effect in their organizations and communities of origin. This was supported and encouraged through maintaining contact with other participants for the exchange of constructive ideas in their daily work, as well as by the desirable active inclusion in these processes of the very young people with cultural inclusion problems.

This educational learning programme has improved the quality of practice in youth work in a general context. Particular focus was given to Youth in Action projects as a means of promoting poetry as a cultural inclusion method.

Your tasks and responsibilities within the team

I had a trainer role in this training course. International team composed by two trainers from Romania and Serbia led this training course. We had good cooperation and worked as a team. After each working day, we had meeting discussing about our impressions that are related with our trainers work and participants.

In collaboration with my co - trainer I was responsible to lead topics about cultural diversity and inclusion of young people with fewer opportunities. Also, I have presented Youth in Action Programme, application procedure and workshops about writing project proposals for future cooperation between partner organizations.

I worked on this training for 8 days as a full time trainer.
