Embracing Diversity Seminar

The training activity took place
in Mollina, Spain
organised by EFIL
21-28 September 2014

Aims & objectives

The seminar aims at building a common understanding on diversity education and changing the mindset, attitude and behavior of participants in both their personal and organisational life.
The specific objectives are:
explore and create a common understanding of diversity education in the framework of inclusive youth opportunities;
create awareness of the perceived and projected differences through various layers of culture, (for instance language, visuals, dances, etc.) and understand the connection in between while developing ways of coping with stereotyping;
reflect on one’s own personal attitude and on organisational practices and trigger behavioural changes;
engage youth in Intercultural Dialogue Day through activities as one example on how to create youth opportunities within diversity education;
link the topic of diversity education to the events of the other organisations at the UYD through joint activities;
develop follow-up activities to foster tolerance and open-mindedness within the AFS/EFIL network and beyond.

Target group & international/intercultural composition of the group & team

Group of participants came from 15 countries around Europe, the trainers team was composed of 6 trainers from Germany, Italy, Hungary, Egypt, Poland and Turkey.

Training methods used & main activities

The diverse methodology included world cafe conversations, simulation games, buzz group discussions, reflection groups, etc.

Outcomes of the activity

The aims and objectives set by the preparatory team focused very much on personal change. This made it hard to measure whether they have been met completely. The programme was designed in a way to foster a safe learning environment where participants have the opportunity to learn and grow together. The preparatory team was able to witness changing attitudes of different individuals. Overall the group of participants varied in terms of experience, background and needs making in challenging for the team to put together a programme that would fit everyone’s expectations. With the programme offered (and adjusted throughout the event), it was possible for every participant to gain something on a personal level.
