Aims & objectives

I was invited as an expert to train a group of young primary school teachers on how to use modern board games in the classrooms with their students. It is a small school that is committed to active and innovative teaching methodologies.

Target group & international/intercultural composition of the group & team

16 teachers under 30 years old participated in the training plus the owner and director of the center. They were all from Romania and covered all areas of primary education.

Training methods used & main activities

I used a methodology called board game-based learning. This methodology uses modern board games, with a series of adaptations and support material, so that teachers can work on the key competencies of the curriculum with students. In addition, different soft skills (e.g. leadership skills, teamwork, problem solving, planning, etc.), essential for life, are also worked on with this methodology.

Outcomes of the activity

The participants had to design a game with the material that I left them and indicate how to implement it in the classroom with the students. This was done in groups of 4 and on the last day everyone tried the games designed by their classmates, receiving my observations in a constructive way.

Your tasks and responsibilities within the team

I was the only coach of this formation. I prepared all the material and told the center in advance which games it should purchase to give the training. Currently, the center applies learning based on board games with students as a non-formal methodology, which complements traditional methodologies.

I worked on this training for 5 days as a full time trainer.

Testimonial of the reference person

Azael Herrero was a trainer in our school in June 2022, when, during a week he taught the young primary school teachers how to use the board games-based learning teaching methodology in class, in order to innovate their educational approach. He guided us in buying the most suitable board games for pupils, to use in school, and now we are using constantly this approach in class. The inner motivation of the primary pupils for learning is higher now and they use the games in their families, also.
His training methods are based on practical activities, learning by discovery and learning by doing approaches and he knows how to encourage and develop the inner motivation in his trainees.
