Exercise
to express stereotypes and prejudices upon other’s countries and upon one’s own country
to get to know points of view from others upon us
to use the proper language for talking about intercultural themes
to create a context of intercultural dialog
to give some theoretical inputs and models upon intercultural method
Instructions:
Each participant expresses (using drawings, photos,…) his/her representation of the other countries represented in the course (at the wall: posters with countries of participants)
Each one sticks his/her perception of the other countries on the respective poster.
Each one expresses (using photos, drawings,…) what he/she thinks being the best and worst in his/her own country and sticks it on the respective poster.
After this activity participants should be given enough time to walk around the room and look at the results of their work.
Finally a longer debriefing should be a confrontation session: at the wall, there will be a lot of posters. One for each represented country in the group and for each country, there will be representations from the natives and non-natives of that country.
Debriefing:
Which image(s) does(do) others have about our country ?
Which image(s) do I have / give upon / from my own country?
How do we deal with the perceptions of others upon our country?
Did you adapt your way of thinking or acting to the team’s typology?
Tips and suggestions:
The debriefing will provide enough room for theoretical reflection /input on:
1. Process of knowledge and simplification of reality (stereotypes and prejudices)
2. Cultures and their different levels (model of the iceberg),…
3. Mutual images and divers ways of seeing reality (filters and distortions)
4. Confrontation to oneself and to the other (questioning oneself, identity)
BE CAREFUL ON HOW YOU DEAL WITH STRONG PREJUDICES ADRESSED TO CERTAIN ISSUES IN CERTAIN COUNTRIES !!
