Ice-breaker, Group Building Activity
Acrobatics can be used for a variety of purposes. It is an excellent ice-breaker and team-building exercise. It encourges participants to push themselves and to take on new challenges. Acrobatics is an activity which helps participants face stereotypes they may have about themselves and about others in the group. Further, acrobatics challenge traditional views of sport and how sport activities can be used.
The workshop is carried out in four parts:
Part 1 - Warming up and trust exercises
Part 2 - Stretching
Part 3 - First acrobatic steps
Part 4 - Building pyramids and standing on shoulders.
(For a detailed description, please download the attached documents.)
Acrobatics can be used with groups of all ages: teenagers, adults, even children from 4 or 5 years of age. it is important to include the warming up and trust-building exercises, especially if the people in the group do not know each other very well. Stretching and warming-up the muscles is important to avoid accidents. Everyone in the group should be taught the "spotter's" or "catcher's" tasks. The group has to take responsibility for safety - it is everyone's job to watch out for one another.

Materials needed:
Acrobatics does not require any special equipment. You can do acrobatics in a gym with crash mats, but barefoot on grass is fine as well. You need an experienced facilitator to demonstrate the proper grips and stance positions. Safety should always be the top priority in acrobatics.
