GORJ COUNTY MUSEUM

The “Alexandru Stefulescu” Gorj County Museum is an important public institution that, through its exhibitions, art galleries, seminars, cultural projects tries to educate and to entertain the local community. It also tries to preserve and to promote local culture and other cultures as well.
The Gorj County Museum is formed by the History – Arheology Museum, the Folk Architecture Museum (which is an open air museum), the Art Museum, a few memorial houses - Constantin Brancusi*s Memorial House, Tudor Vladimirescu*s Memorial House, Ecaterina Teodoroiu*s Memorial House - and The Polovragi Cave.
The institution has partnerships and collaborations with top universities from Romania, Embassies, other museums, professors, teachers, students, scientists, writers, painters, specialists, etc. We also developed, in 2013, a partnership with the Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences from Charelston, West Virginia, USA. The project is about folk music and traditions.
Our infrastructure permits us to achieve our main goals – to educate the public, to preserve, to promote the cultural heritage - and it consists of large conference rooms, exhibiting space, restauration labs, storage space for the cultural objects, etc.
The Ethnography Branch of the Gorj County - The Folk Architecture Museum is focused on keeping old traditions, folk art and culture alive. It is an open air museum that lies on a surface of 500,000 square feet and is ”sprinkled” with 35 old folk house and 2 old orthodox churches. The nature is great there and it permits us to organise there workshops and seminars on different topics.
Our institution has over 27,000 cultural objects and develops each year many cultural projects with schools, the local public libray, the local theatre and other institutions in order to educate and entertain the community. Every year we participate at the ”Museum Open-Nights”, event which takes place in May in museums throughout Europe.
The Art Museum is located in the Central Park of the town and has a lot of paintings from different Romanian and foreign painters. We also have an orthodox icon collection. In order to educate the local community and the tourists who come to visit Constantin Brâncusi*s masterpieces - The Silence Table and The Kisss Gate – that are placed near the Art Museum, we have many art exhibitions of local and national artists.
