Asociatia Eurpeana Thalheim Rumanien

The European Association Thalheim Rumanien was founded in 2009 in the Rosia commune. Its objectives are the promotion of civic values, starting common projects and collaborations between the commune of Rosia and the T(h)alheim localities in the area of culture, economy and education. The association offers moral and material support to the youth from Rosia, organizes cultural, educative and sport activities - meant to improve the psycho-motor development. One of the important objectives of the association is the organization of symposiums, charity events, all for raising the material funds necessary to the realization of its purposes. The collaboration with the local public administration is not neglected in order to support the activities of the organization.

This year, the association initiated a project that has the objective to build a youth center for the use of all the young people from Rosia.

The village’s history

In the South of Transylvania, at the foot of the Carpathians, lies one of the most beautiful areas of Romania, Sibiu, where visitors may see the natural beauty of the environment , true jewels of Transylvanian cultural patrimony. The landscape is marked by the wild peaks of the highest Romanian mountains, and in their shadow rest the traditional fortress churches, specific to the Transylvanian area and the cultural riches of the medieval settlements- out of which the most famous is the city of Sibiu, European cultural capital of 2007.

Ten km away from Sibiu, the former European Capital of Culture, just over a hill, lays the village of Thalheim. Together with other 5 smaller settlements (Rothberg, Kastenholz, Harbach, Neudorf, Johannisberg) it forms the common of Rosia(Rothberg). The village is first documentarily attested in 1327, and the smaller villages of the area are documented around the same time. The village is older though, and as proof we have the evangelic church of the village, built around the year 1270.

Thalheim 2011
Sibiu, Transilvania, Romania

In 2011 the 51st meeting of the European localities that have the name “T(h)alheim” will be hosted by the village of Thalheim, Sibiu, Romania. For the first time this meeting will take place outside a German speaking space, although the area keeps visible traces of what once was a strong German community.

The area was not only a center of tolerance and interaction between different nationalities, but also between different religious confessions – Orthodox, Lutheran, Catholic and Reformed lived in harmony, especially in the difficult years of the communism.
