WORDS MATTER - Communicating Meaningfully with Youth

Training Course

10-17 July 2025 | Marseille, France

This course is designed to enhance the youth workers’ competences by guiding them to shift perspectives, explore their own bias and assumptions, and develop a more sensitive, inclusive and empathetic link with the young people they work with.

Why do words matter? Because words influence the way we communicate, but also shape our representations, perspectives, and understandings of the world around us. We believe that exploring words through youth workers’ experiences and competences development can lead to building more meaningful links with young people.

Objectives of the training.

Guide and support Youth Workers in :

  • Shift perspectives, broaden viewpoints; encourage open-mindedness;
  • Address assumptions, challenge personal biases, cultivate empathy;
  • Build brave, inclusive and empowering spaces of expression for young people;
  • Strengthen capacity to navigate uncertainty and ambiguity in diverse group settings;
  • Using verbal and non-verbal communication strategies to assure clarity, inclusiveness, and engagement in all interactions with youth;
  • Exploring the concept of vulnerability as a strength;
  • Raising awareness and sensitivity towards diverse backgrounds.

Background and context

This activity is hosted and facilitated by Hors Pistes, an organisation based in Marseille, active for 12 years in the field of non-formal education and youth work, at both local and international scale.

This training is the result of a sequence of 4 youth exchanges called “Words matter” (2017 - 2023) in which Hors Pistes worked with young people on sensitivity, communication, interculturality, stereotypes and assumptions. This helped us to understand the needs of youth and the problematics they face in their link with others and in society.

We decided to create the “Youth Workers’ edition” of Words Matter to support the professionals working with youth in improving understanding, empathy, trust and communication with their target groups. We have designed a program inspired by the previous editions of Words Matter, reframed and adapted to explore the Youth Workers’ competences’ model.
