SpeakUP!

Training Course

10-18 September 2024 | Carei, Romania

SpeakUP! is a training course aimed at supporting youth workers to increase their public speaking skills and tackle anxiety. Participants will be involved in creative activities designed through experiential methodologies.

In recent years, numerous studies have highlighted an increase in mental health challenges among young people due to the COVID-19 pandemic and other societal factors (McCharty, 2019; Hawes et al., 2021; Valma et al., 2021). Public speaking has also been identified as one of the most common fears, with over 60% of young people reporting anxiety about it and over 80% expressing a desire to study it in school or university (Marinho et al., 2017).

Feedback from our partner organizations confirms that both youth workers and young people struggle with public speaking anxiety. Over 60% of youth workers experience anxiety and fear of expressing themselves. As public speaking is a crucial skill for youth workers who facilitate workshops, our project aims to support these individuals in improving their public speaking abilities and confidence, ultimately increasing their resilience.

Our project focuses on 34 youth workers, enhancing their public speaking skills and confidence through a training course in Carei from September 10-18, 2024. The indirect beneficiaries will be the young people these youth workers engage with in their communities. The project will emphasize discovering tools and best practices related to public speaking, empowering youth workers to increase their self-esteem and communication skills.

The objectives to achieve this goal include:
- Increasing knowledge about resilience and anxiety among the 34 youth workers during the training course.
- Enhancing practical public speaking skills through hands-on activities.
- Producing three digital materials (a psycho-education booklet, a storytelling guide, and a public speaking guide).
- Creating at least one digital educational output (TikTok or YouTube channel) for dissemination in local communities.
- Strengthening collaboration between the eight partner NGOs.
- Developing two future joint project outlines addressing resilience and public speaking.

The program activities will cater to the participating youth workers' needs using integrative methods such as team building, energizers, presentations, role-plays, experiential workshops, and digital material co-creation workshops. The activities will progress from team-building on the first day to mental health and resilience education on the second day, followed by exercises focusing on public speaking skills and addressing the fear of public speaking. The training will culminate with presentations by the participants and an evaluation and planning session on the last day.

Each day will also include "DigiLAB" activities where participants create digital materials, such as TikTok and YouTube content. The project includes 34 participants (32 youth workers and 2 facilitators) from diverse backgrounds and experiences, with an emphasis on including participants from disadvantaged areas or with fewer opportunities.

The "SpeakUP!" initiative aims to increase resilience among youth workers by enhancing their public speaking skills. Expected impacts include increased self-confidence, better public speaking abilities, enhanced digital skills, greater awareness of mental health, and improved professionalism among youth workers. The project also aims to boost the visibility and quality of partner organizations and promote the dissemination of project results, inspiring further personal and professional development among youth workers.
