Soil & Soul | Food-related practices for inclusive and engaging learning experiences (Participatory Action Research)

Training Course

18-26 October 2024 | Ommen, Netherlands

Soil & Soul is a training course for educators who want to develop their practice in creating engaging and inclusive learning in the method of Participatory Action Research. More concrete, using food-related practices to empower young people.

Soil & Soul is a 7-day training course for educators, youth workers, ESC mentors, teachers and active youth leaders who want to develop their practice in creating engaging and inclusive learning environments.

More concretely, you will practice and create your own method of working with food-related practices in education. Such practices can be community cooking, urban gardening, food geography, seasonal calendar creation, food tours etc. All of them are inspired by the PAR (Participatory Action Research), stemming from the Pedagogy of the Oppressed.

All those methods are great to apply when working with young people from vulnerable backgrounds and with diverse groups since food is a common experience for people from all kinds of groups in society. Those methods aim to empower young people to know better their local systems and local community, to measure their impact, and to feel confident to take action

You will learn the theory behind the practices and have the chance to design your own forms, according to the context in which you work.

This training is specifically recommended for you if:

  • You work in an NGO, with young people between 16 and 30 years old
  • You use community education and non-formal learning to engage the local youth
  • You are interested in the topics of food, food anthropology, ecology, sustainability and social inclusion
