Making SOAP: Sustainable Options for Active People

Training Course

28 September - 5 October 2014 | Medinaceli, Soria, Spain

Exploring sustainable approaches to work, life and education starting from the local ressources. We aim to enhance youth worker's competences to empower young people to take active participation in the change towards a more sustainable society.
Education is the only way to change reality into a more sustainable, fair and human society, and the role of youth workers is crucial in the process of empowering young people to take their own future into their own hands. By offering this training, we want to improve youth workers competences and skills regarding green entrepreneurship. It is also a good opportunity to give new tools and share good practices and experiences of local initiatives in Europe that, starting from the local resources and with little money, can become a valuable and sustainable job. We believe in the power of small actions in local interconnected places, and the need of promoting entrepreneurial spirit among young people, as the main stakeholder for the future legacy. Our proposal is to start thinking about what if we change paradigm and, instead of looking for more profit, try to invest more in human and nature relations which can be translated into a richer and happier society. Objectives - To share different experiences and good practices related to the topic of the course, creating a common understanding around the concept of sustainability. - To provide youth workers with new tools, methods and ideas to be used in their own life and work, to promote an active participation of young people. - To experience working in nature and with nature, living in community and sharing the resources. - To strengthen international connections and networks for future projects. Methods The training will apply non formal education methods based on community building and open air activities. It will be, more than anything, an experiential learning project, where participants are expected to live in a community based group, using local resources and with lightweight lifestyles. Some of the activities are: walking in nature, sustainability workshops, bioclimatic construction workshops, group work and dynamics, games and many others. The venue of the training course is Medinaceli, a small village in central Spain placed 150 km far from Madrid. It's a natural and cultural privileged place where the landscape will be our best ally to get inspired.

La Noguera Medinaceli (Youth NGO)

The Cooperative La Noguera Medinaceli finds its origins in the meeting of people with different backgrounds but the same ecological point of view, sharing a comprehensive rural development project in Medinaceli, central Spain.
We believe that too fast paces of life and consumption don’t help society to improve their human development, and also give rise to a considerable damage to the environment, endangering the welfare of present and future generations in different parts of the world.

Education and communication are both central tools of our mission, directed to generate a sustainable alternative of development, where economy is at the service of people and not the opposite. We propose this landscape, so interconnected and yet so isolated, to be an open space to everyone, in order to seek together for alternatives and to find a balance with the environment.
