Falling Into Place: Capacity-Building of Youth Workers in Participatory Placemaking & Creative Arts Methods in Rural Contexts, as a tool to build Democratic values at the local level

Training Course

9-15 June 2025 | Marcinkonys, Lithuania

Placemaking is a way of working with people who use (or could use) a space, to make sure the space responds to their needs. In this TC, we collaborate with a municipality explore how youth placemaking rurally in Lithuania.

Placemaking has emerged as a powerful tool across various domains such as the arts, community development, and education, aiming to enhance community well-being through innovative, collaborative solutions to local challenges. This approach is particularly impactful in supporting youth work and NfE, offering significant benefits to young people from historically marginalised and socially excluded groups. However, the practical application of these transformative pedagogies in placemaking initiatives remains underexplored. Done meaningfully, youth involvement in placemaking could extend to influencing organisational structures and values, engaging in meaningful dialogue about their communities, and actively exploring their neighborhoods and physical spaces.

This training course will bring together people working with young people from Germany, Lithuania, Turkey and Italy to develop their skills in supporting young people to implement placemaking initiatives.

Objectives of the TC and study visits:

  • To provide space for the exchange on the local work and realities
  • To explore placemaking in the context of rural youth work;
  • To build knowledge and skills on core principles of youth work;
  • To improve skills in supporting youth initiatives / community building and to plan the application of skills in the local context;
  • Develop intercultural skills of youth workers
  • Build a foundation for future collaboration and develop a community of practice with shared values.
