EMPOWER - A programme on youth-driven community development

Training Course

17-25 October 2023 | Kobuleti and Rustavi, Georgia

EMPOWER is a 6-months blended training programme to develop competences of young leaders, youth workers and community workers for empowering young people to actively engage in community development.

The programme aims to develop competences that are needed to empower young people to actively engage in community development. A specific focus of the programme will be how to plan youth projects from conducting community research, context analysis to project design.

EMPOWER explores the following themes:

  • What is youth empowerment and its principles?
  • What is community development, and specifically youth-led community development?
  • How do I conduct community research as part of a needs assessment?
  • How do I conduct a context analysis as the basis for my project design?
  • How do I design a needs-based and outcome-oriented youth project?

The blended programme is composed of two online learning activities and two residential training courses. Together these four activities constitute a single programme in which each activity builds upon the previous one.

The four interlinked educational activities are:

  • E-learning course 1 – Framing community development and youth empowerment
  • Training course 1 – Sharing practices on youth empowerment and community development
  • E-learning course 2 – Framing community development and youth empowerment
  • Training course 2 – Partnerships for youth-led community development

Participants are expected to participate fully in all four training activities. The methodological framework of the training programme is based on non-formal education.

What can you gain from the training programme?

The training programme is primarily designed to help youth workers and youth leaders to improve their competences in planning youth projects fostering youth-led community development.

The programme offers the following:

  • A save space to development competences for planning youth empowerment projects through a learning by doing approach
  • The chance to develop own project ideas for local initiative with peer support and under coaching of experienced trainers
  • Space for building project-based international cooperation between individuals and their organisations based in the EU and within the Eastern partnership region
  • Time to establish links between like-minded individuals that allow for a tailor-made knowledge transfer and peer-to-peer support
