DIY and electronics for Music education

Training Course

13-18 October 2024 | Toulouse, France

What can soldering and hammering possibly have to do with scales or an electric jack? Music is the connection! In this training course, participants will learn how to employ DIY techniques and electronic circuits to send music education into orbit.

What can soldering and hammering possibly have to do with scales or an electric jack? Obviously, music's the connection! In this pioneering training course, participants will learn how to employ DIY techniques and electronic circuits to send music education into orbit.

What does 'music' mean? Have you ever asked yourself? It's a good question to get a musical journey underway in education. Because music doesn't have to be tonal or even based on notes.

Improvised instruments, everyday sounds—even silences—can form part of a composition. In this workshop, educators will learn how to make creative use of concepts from DIY, making, electronics and sound-based music making, but also how to integrate activities centred on listening, music performance and construction with their audiences.

By the end of the course, participants are expected to:

  • Develop DIY musical instruments using scrap materials and repurposed objects.
  • Amplify sounds using tools such as piezoelectric elements and similar technologies.
  • Apply reuse and transformation techniques to create functional and innovative musical instruments.
  • Create music from unconventional sounds and settings, exploring creative possibilities.
  • Integrate DIY musical instruments with dedicated music software to enhance the musical experience and educational journey.
  • Incorporate a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) dimension into musical education.
  • Expand their network across Europe, fostering long-lasting exchanges of best practices.

The training course will take place at Digijeunes makerspace in Toulouse. Participants will have access to a wide range of tools and machines, encouraging creativity and hands-on practice from day one. The program emphasizes learning by doing and trial and error throughout its duration.

Additionally, the program includes sessions where participants will interact with a local school and students aged 14 to 15 years old, as well as meetings with local NGOs involved in music education and non-formal education.
